What are antioxidants?

Mangosteen, according to many scientists is the source of the most powerful antioxidant group that has ever been clinically studied extensively. Various lab tests and studies that have been performed have revealed that Mangosteen contains many unique organic compounds known as Xanthones.
The actual source of the most powerful antioxidants in existence today comes directly from the Xanthones themselves which are naturally occurring active substances that are prevalent within the Mangosteen fruit itself. Xanthones are not incredibly common among fruits and vegetables. To date, there are only about 200 known types of Xanthones yet amazingly about 40 of them are found in mangosteen.

Tufts University USDA researchers developed the ORAC or Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity. This is a major test renowned for being the standard in evaluating the antioxidant activity or overall antioxidant strength of substances. With this test, if a substance has a high ORAC value it means that it has a high antioxidant power. Whole blueberries, for instance, are considered to be a sufficient source of antioxidants scoring an average ORAC value unit of 61 per gram while pomegranates have a slightly higher ORAC value unit 105 per gram. Mangosteen, on the other hand, has an ORAC value of around 17,000, making it the fruit with the most powerful antioxidant content known to date.

Eating a substantial amount of mangosteen or taking supplements with large amounts of mangosteen on a regular basis supplies the body with the antioxidant dose it requires to effectively neutralize the harmful free radicals while sweeping away various toxins.
