Metabolism as a simple definition that is very easy to understand
is, your body's ability to break down calories. In return, once your
body has broken down the calories from your food, your body will then be
able to use those calories for energy. A person's metabolism rate will
depend on the number of calories you consume each day, and the number of
calories you burn off during exercise. Of course genetic makeup also
has a lot to do with your metabolism, just like it has ultimate control
over what you will look like underneath all of your current fat.
A person who develops a consistent effort of maintaining a certain number of calories with consistent exercise routines, will have a much higher metabolism than someone that isn't developing both of these strategies together. A person who simply workouts regularly but doesn't monitor their daily calorie intake, could be defeating their full purpose of working out in the first place. Let's take a look at some ways that you can personally boost your metabolism, so that you won't be blaming genetics or someone else for your lack of results.
The best way to boost your metabolism is to increase your body's need for energy. In simpler terms, create events or make choices during your regular day, that will manipulate your body to get up and move! For example, create a fun more energetic way of getting to the refrigerator each day. If you have to jump over your kids toys, instead of walking in a straight path, you'll be increasing your body's need for energy.
The most common ways to boost your metabolism, is to workout aerobically. Adding strength during your workouts will be one of the best ways a workout can be used to boost your metabolism. The more energy your body requires, the faster your metabolism will be. Your body burns off 200 plus calories per day while just digesting your food. This concept introduces another way to boost your metabolism. Everybody has been taught portion control before, we just simply don't have the discipline or will power to follow through with it. If you can simply split your daily caloric intake into 5-6 small little snacks, you will be asking your body to digest food throughout the entire day.
Remember, food digestion burns off calories and asks your body for energy to do so. Another great way to boost your metabolism, is to focus on muscle building rather than losing weight. Each extra pound of muscle your body has, can burn up to 50 additional calories just to maintain your body's muscle mass. If a part of your body isn't made of muscle, it's fat! A 4th way to boost metabolism, is to incorporate cardio work into your strength training exercises. This also adds support for choosing High Intensity workouts vs. what everybody else is doing. Another way to boost your metabolism, is to eat at least half your body weight in protein. Protein requires almost 25% more energy to digest than carbohydrates or fat. There are many more ways to boost your metabolism, but I just wanted to cover the easiest and most common ways.
In Conclusion, your metabolism is simply your body's ability to break down calories from your food and turn it into energy. Again, there are even more ways to boost your metabolism, but these 5 ways I urge you to try as soon as possible. The more often you workout and eat, the more successful your metabolism will be.
