By Lance Manyon

Weight loss from a physical fitness, health, or medicine point of view is the reduction of the body mass. This reduction results from mean loss of body fats, fluid, or adipose tissue and/or lean mass, that is muscle, tendon, bone mineral deposit, and other connective tissues. This activity can happen without the intention of the person because of an underlying illness. It may also be due to personal effort to improve an overweight or obese state.

Unintentional weight reduction comes from stressful conditions and various diseases among other causes. Such losses are realized when one loses over five percent of mass in a month whereas there are no modifications in their daily routine or diet. Disruption to the functioning of hormones like overactive thyroid, a disorder called hyperthyroidism might show itself as loss in mass. Reasons for this condition are highlighted below.

Poor management of type 1 diabetes mellitus results in excess glucose and insufficient insulin in blood vessels. This causes an increased rate of amino acid breakdown in tissues. In the end, there in a significant decrease in both fat and lean mass reducing total body mass. Apart from illnesses, fluid loss may result from inadequate fluid intake, certain medication, and shortage in food supply leading to starvation.

Cancer leads to unexplained drop in body mass. The main forms of cancer that result into such losses include ovarian, prostate, carcinoma, pancreatic, hepatocellular, hematologic, and lung. Viral infection like the one caused by the HIV virus results in weight reduction in a short period if not managed fast. Another cause of idiopathic body mass reduction include diseases like pancreatitis, diarrhea, gastritis, peptic ulcers, and inflammatory bowel disease.

Research shows that individuals who live with stress lose mass fast. There is however, latest research that reveals that high level of stress causes obesity and overweight in people. Modification of lifestyle or living conditions might also cause this problem.

Intentional weight loss results from personal efforts to cut down body mass. The intention may be to improve appearance, fitness, or for health purposes. Athletes seek to lose body mass so as to improve performance or so that they can reach a given level required to participate in certain sports. Regulation of diet and participation in physical exercise are the main approaches followed to achieve this goal.

There are several recipes that are handy for losing weight. Other methods that can be used include oriental medicine, ear acupuncture, acupressure, and activities intended to lose fat. Specialists can provide customized nutritional programs to suit personal needs. Most programs are directed at achieving results in steps in a progressive manner. This means that the client has short term goals that they need to achieve within a predetermined period. Intentional reduction in mass may be accompanied with decreased muscle strength, osteoporosis, difficulty fighting off infections, increased risk of death, and difficulty regulating temperature.

Therapeutic weight loss methods base on nutritional patterns and increased physical activity. Other modern methods comprise use of supplements and drugs that block absorption or fat, reduce stomach volume, or appetite. Such supplements and drugs should only be utilized under the strict guidance of a trained medical practitioner.
